Ordering a Gift from Japan in Time for Christmas: What Actually Decides When It Arrives
This guide contains affiliate links: if you buy through one, the shop may pay me a small commission at no extra cost to you. How I choose and how I earn
Will a gift ordered from Japan arrive by Christmas? What the shops actually state about shipping, last year's holiday schedule, who pays the duties, and why you should open the box the day it lands.
Order early, and don’t plan around a date. A gift from Japan passes through four stages before it reaches a doorstep in the US — the shop packing it, the flight, customs, and the local courier — and in December every one of them is busier than usual. None of the shops on this site guarantees a delivery date, and nobody else can either.
What you can control is when you order, where it’s delivered, and what you do the day it arrives. This page covers those three, using what the shops actually publish.
The four stages, and where time goes
- The shop prepares the order. Discovery Japan Mall says orders usually ship within 5 business days, longer if an item has to come to its warehouse from a supplier (Discovery Japan Mall, FAQ). Hocho Knife gives up to 3–5 business days after payment, excluding weekends and Japanese holidays (Hocho Knife, shipping & returns).
- International transit. The shop chooses the carrier. Discovery says it picks the courier it considers most efficient for the address; Hocho Knife ships by FedEx or EMS (Japan Post).
- Customs. Every shipment into the US now goes through formal duty collection, since the $800 duty-free allowance was suspended in 2025. This is where unpredictable delays happen. The details are in ordering from Japan to the US: duties in 2026.
- Local delivery. The last mile, in the busiest weeks of the year for US carriers.
Neither shop promises a delivery date, and any figures they publish are for a normal season. December is not a normal season.
What last year’s schedule tells you
Neither shop had published a 2026 holiday schedule when this page was checked on 16 September 2026. Discovery Japan Mall did publish one for the 2025 season (Discovery Japan Mall, Year-End Holiday Shipping Schedule 2025–2026):
- Order by 16 December 2025 “to ensure delivery before the end of 2025.”
- Last shipping day 25 December 2025, with those shipments estimated to arrive by 31 December or after 5 January 2026.
- Closed 27 December 2025 to 4 January 2026. Orders placed in that window shipped after 5 January, and inquiries and refunds were handled after that date too.
Read the first line carefully: that was the date for delivery by the end of the year, not by Christmas Day. For something to open on the 25th, the practical deadline sits earlier. This page won’t invent a date for 2026, but last year’s pattern suggests two things: a year-end closure is likely again, and waiting until mid-December is cutting it very fine.
A comfortable target is mid-November. It leaves room for a slow customs week, a re-delivery, and the week you’ll want between arrival and wrapping.
Where it’s delivered matters as much as when
This is the part that catches people out with gifts from Japan.
| Hocho Knife (knives) | Discovery Japan Mall (watches, pens, glass, tackle) | |
|---|---|---|
| US import duties | The shop says it advances and pays them on eligible orders; part may be charged at checkout | Not included; collected on delivery |
| If shipped straight to the recipient | Nothing more due on delivery for eligible orders, per the shop; a courier may add a small fee | The recipient gets the duty bill |
| Published processing time | Up to 3–5 business days after payment | Usually within 5 business days |
| Returns window | 14 days from delivery, unopened and unused items | 7 days from delivery, damaged/defective/incorrect only |
Checked 26 September 2026: Hocho Knife’s payment, shipping & returns page; checked 16 September 2026: Discovery Japan Mall’s Customs Duties and Returns & Exchanges pages.
For a gift from a shop that collects duties on delivery, have it sent to yourself. Then you pay the charge, you check the item, and you hand it over wrapped. A courier asking your father for payment on his doorstep is not the surprise you had in mind.
And a “gift” label won’t help: US Customs’ gift exemption covers bona fide gifts sent without payment and excludes items given in connection with a purchase, and Discovery Japan Mall says a gift marking doesn’t exempt a package from customs taxes.
Open the box the day it lands
Discovery Japan Mall accepts returns only for items that arrive damaged, defective or incorrect, and only when reported within 7 days of delivery; it doesn’t accept change-of-mind returns. Hocho Knife gives 14 days from delivery, for items that are unopened and unused with all original packing.
If a watch arrives on 28 November and you keep the carton sealed until Christmas morning, you’ve quietly given up the one protection you had. So:
- Open the shipping carton when it arrives.
- Check the item matches what you ordered — the reference number on a watch, the name and length on a knife. With a knife from Hocho Knife, check without using it, since its returns are for unused items.
- Photograph anything wrong, and contact the shop straight away, inside its window.
- Put it back in its box and wrap it.
The gift is just as much of a surprise. You’re the only one who knows it’s been opened.
If it won’t make it
Sometimes the order goes in too late, or customs holds a parcel for a week. It happens. The gift still works:
- Print a photo of what’s coming and put it in a card.
- Wrap the empty product box (if you ordered something else that arrived) with a note.
- Write the card anyway. “It’s on a plane from Japan” is a better line than most gift tags.
A present that arrives on 3 January is still a present. A duty bill at the door on the 24th is the thing to avoid.
A short checklist
- Mid-November: order, if you want margin.
- Before you pay: check the checkout total, and whether duties are included or collected on delivery.
- Delivery address: your own, if the shop collects duties at the door.
- Watch the shop’s site in late November for its year-end schedule.
- On arrival: open, check, photograph if needed, re-wrap.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does shipping from Japan to the US take?
- It depends on the shop and the carrier. Discovery Japan Mall says orders usually ship within 5 business days, and longer if an item has to reach its warehouse first; delivery time after that depends on the courier and customs. Hocho Knife says it ships within 3–5 business days of payment for most knives, excluding weekends and Japanese holidays. December adds volume and delays at every step.
- What's the last day to order from Japan for Christmas?
- Neither shop had published a 2026 date when this was checked. For the 2025 season, Discovery Japan Mall published a year-end schedule asking customers to order by 16 December 2025 to ensure delivery before the end of 2025 — that's the end of the year, not Christmas Day. Treat mid-November as a comfortable target and check each shop's announcements.
- Will the shop be closed over the holidays?
- Discovery Japan Mall was closed from 27 December 2025 to 4 January 2026 last season, and said orders placed in that window would ship after 5 January and inquiries would be answered after that date. Japanese businesses commonly close over the New Year period, so expect a similar pause in 2026.
- Who pays the import duties on a gift sent from Japan?
- It depends on the shop. Hocho Knife says it advances and pays US import duties on eligible orders, so nothing more is due on delivery. Discovery Japan Mall says duties and taxes aren't included and are collected on delivery — so if the package goes straight to the person you're giving it to, they get the bill.
- Does marking it as a gift avoid customs duties?
- No. US Customs and Border Protection's gift exemption applies to bona fide gifts sent without payment, and excludes items given in connection with a purchase. Discovery Japan Mall also says a gift marking doesn't exempt a package from customs taxes.
- Should I keep the box sealed until Christmas?
- Not the shipping carton. Both shops accept returns for damaged, defective or incorrect items only when reported within 7 days of delivery. If the parcel arrives in late November, open it, check the item, then wrap it again. Waiting until the 25th can put you outside that window.
- What if it won't arrive in time?
- Give the gift anyway, just not the object. A printed photo of what's on its way, a handwritten card, or the empty box with a note that the real thing is crossing the Pacific all work. A gift that arrives on 3 January is still a gift.
