A Japanese Christmas Gift for Your Wife, Partner or Mom: Start With How She Spends Her Evenings

Not jewelry, not a candle. Japanese gifts for a wife, partner or mother chosen by how she spends her time — hosting, drawing, writing, cooking, or just wanting to know the time — with what to check before ordering from Japan.

Most gift guides “for her” are a list of scarves, candles and jewelry, chosen for a woman in general. This one isn’t. It starts from something more useful: what she does with her evenings and weekends.

Watch for a week. Does she host? Draw in a notebook? Write cards by hand? Spend Sunday turning a box of vegetables into a week of meals? The best gift sits inside a habit she already has — and Japan happens to make very good things for most of them.

I’m a designer in Japan, not a stylist, and I haven’t used these particular pieces. Specifications are the makers’ and shops’ own; prices and stock were checked on 16 September 2026 and change.

If she hosts: a glass with a maker’s name

Kagami Crystal Edo Kiriko rock glass, Kikuhana (chrysanthemum). Edo Kiriko is Tokyo cut glass: a colored layer over clear crystal, cut through by hand to make the pattern. Kagami says this piece was designed and cut by the certified traditional craftsman Satoshi Nabeya, and chrysanthemum patterns are traditionally associated with long life — which is why it works for a mother as much as a partner. The shop lists it with a wooden box.

It’s a glass for the drink she already pours, whether that’s whisky, a highball or something with no alcohol at all. What Edo Kiriko is, and how to tell good cutting from ordinary, is in what is Edo Kiriko?; for the no-alcohol version of the host, see a glass for the friend who hosts mocktail nights.

Before you buy: hand-wash only, and not a glass to leave in a busy sink. Open the parcel on arrival.

If she draws or keeps a journal: pencils that travel

Holbein Artists’ Colored Pencils, 24 colors (OP920). Holbein, a Japanese art-materials maker founded in 1900, describes these as oil-based artists’ pencils with a soft core, and lists the 24-color set in a tin. It’s the size that goes in a bag rather than staying on a desk, and at around ¥7,000 it’s a gift that doesn’t ask her to take up drawing seriously — just to enjoy it.

Add a notebook she’d like and a pocket sharpener; neither is included. More on the set in colored pencils for an analog bag.

If she writes by hand: a pen that feels like a small luxury

Sailor Yubi Maki-e ballpoint, “Sakura and Butterflies”. Maki-e is the Japanese lacquer technique of sprinkling metal powder into a design; Sailor describes this line as printed maki-e with hand-sprinkled gold and silver powder. It’s an ordinary refillable ballpoint underneath, so there’s nothing to learn — which makes it a good gift for a mother who writes cards, or a small second present alongside something larger. The shop lists it as a 0.7mm knock-type pen with an aluminum barrel; refills are Sailor’s own and sold separately.

If she’d use a fountain pen, a first fountain pen from Japan is the bigger version of this idea.

If she’s the cook: the knife for the job she does most

Kanetsune KC-940 Nakiri, 165mm. A nakiri is the Japanese vegetable knife: flat edge, square tip, made to push straight down through a stack of greens. Hocho Knife’s specifications: VG1 high-carbon stainless, HRC 59–60, hammered finish, double-edged; blade 165mm (6.5 in), spine about 2.0mm, 285mm overall, 174g; laminated-wood handle; made in Seki by Kanetsune.

This only works for someone who genuinely enjoys the prep, and already has an everyday knife. For her it’s a second knife with a clear job, and a pleasure every Sunday. If a knife would read as “more cooking for you”, choose something else. The fuller case is in a nakiri for the partner who loves their CSA box.

Before you buy: hand-wash, dry, wooden or soft plastic board. The link opens the knife’s page on Hocho Knife, which ships from Japan and says it prepays US import duties on eligible orders.

If she just wants to know the time: a watch with a Japanese story

Seiko Riki AKPK437 “Kasane”. Designed after the work of the Japanese industrial designer Riki Watanabe, and sold under Seiko’s Alba brand in Japan. Retailer listings give it as a 36mm quartz watch, 6.9mm thick and 39g (Seiko’s own product page is no longer online), with a battery life of about 3 years according to Seiko’s VX51 manual, on a calf strap in a traditional Japanese two-color pairing — the “kasane” of the name. Small, light, and simple enough to wear every day.

For a dressier, mechanical watch at a much higher price, the 34mm Seiko Presage Cocktail Time in JDM watches worth importing is the step up. If the gift is for a new mother, a Japanese watch as a push present compares three watches with that in mind.

Before you buy: check her wrist size against a strap she already wears. This is a Japanese domestic model; see the warranty note below.

The question to ask first

If you can, ask something that doesn’t give the game away: “What would make your Sundays nicer?” or “If you had an hour to yourself, what would you do with it?” The answer usually points to one of the sections above — or to none of them, which is useful to know too.

A more expensive gift isn’t a more loving one. The right one is the one she uses in February.

Ordering from Japan

Okurimono Japan doesn’t sell anything. “Check Price” goes to the shop — Discovery Japan Mall for the glass, pencils, pen and watch, Hocho Knife for the knife — and you order and pay there, on that shop’s terms. If you buy through a link here, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

  • Prices and stock change. Checked 16 September 2026, before shipping and any duties.
  • Duties. Discovery Japan Mall collects duties on delivery; Hocho Knife says it prepays them on eligible US orders. If the gift goes straight to her from Discovery, she gets the bill — send it to yourself instead.
  • Warranty. Discovery Japan Mall says Japanese domestic models carry the domestic warranty only in Japan unless a worldwide warranty card is included.
  • Returns. Both shops accept claims only for damaged, defective or incorrect items within 7 days of delivery. Open it when it arrives.
  • Timing. See ordering from Japan in time for Christmas, and How to Buy for everything else.

Frequently asked questions

What's a good Japanese Christmas gift for my wife?
One that fits something she already does. If she hosts, a piece of Edo Kiriko cut glass; if she draws or journals, a small set of good colored pencils; if she writes, a pen she'll use; if she cooks, a knife for the job she does most. The object matters less than the fit.
Is a kitchen knife an unromantic gift?
Only if she doesn't cook, or if it arrives as a hint. For someone who spends Sunday prepping vegetables, a good nakiri is a thoughtful gift that she uses every week. If you're unsure, it's better as a second present than the main one.
What's a good Japanese gift for my mother?
Something with a story she can repeat. A chrysanthemum-pattern Edo Kiriko glass (Kagami associates the pattern with long life), or a Seiko watch designed after the Japanese industrial designer Riki Watanabe with a strap in a traditional two-color pairing, are both easy to explain at the table.
How do I know her wrist size for a watch?
Borrow a watch she already wears and measure the strap at the hole she uses, or measure a bracelet laid flat. The Seiko Riki in this guide is a 36mm case on a leather strap, which is simpler to fit than a metal bracelet.
Is Edo Kiriko safe to ship from Japan?
The shop ships with tracking and insurance, and lists these Kagami pieces with a wooden box. Open the parcel as soon as it arrives: the shop accepts claims for damaged items only within 7 days of delivery.
Will it arrive before Christmas?
No shop can promise that. Order by mid-November if you can, have it sent to yourself if duties are collected on delivery, and read the Christmas ordering guide for last year's holiday schedule.
